You can choose any type of roof if you’re responsible for replacing your Florida roof . The question is: What roof is best for high winds? Which roof is best suited to the challenges of Florida’s high winds?

Nothing

Nothing humans are able to make or do will be equal to Mother Nature. Manufacturers don’t test any material — tiles, metal, shingles– at speeds greater than 150 mph.

Your roofer may not be able to help you if your home is directly in the path of a Category 3 hurricane or higher. Instead, consider hurricane evacuation routes. Take everything you need and your loved ones with you.

Roofers still test their products in extreme wind conditions. Three roofing materials are better than others:

  1. Metal panels — Wind-rated upto 140 mph sustained winds with the ability to resist gusts up to 180mph!
  2. Tile – Wind-rated Up to 125 mph sustained wind
  3. Shingles — Wind-rated to withstand 110-mph winds

Everything

You can rest assured that your Florida home will have protection from the elements. It is a smart decision to consult your roofer about the best roof to fit your needs. Metal is the clear winner if you intend to live in your home for a long time.

If you are concerned about the initial installation costs, and you weigh them against the possibility of a hurricane – you can ask your roofer to take additional measures with less costly materials.

  • Hurricane clips to attach the roof to the walls
  • For wind uplift, foam is added to tiles to increase hold-down resistance
  • Hurricane-rated Shingles

If you are soliciting bids, make sure to include details about these and other measures. They are rarely included in a written estimate by a roofer.

Installer

Your home’s wind resistance can be reduced by selecting sturdy materials. The quality and method for installation can vary greatly.

An experienced installer will be able to lay a sturdy, yet affordable shingle roof that can withstand even the strongest winds. A poor installer can destroy a metal roof that costs thousands of dollars in two days.
